DVD Regions not applicable

Posted in Blog on Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

If you buy a DVD in Japan and bring it bak to your home, say in Toronto, Canada, it’s unlikely to play in your DVD player. That’s because DVDs are encoded for geographic regions and they will not play in those other regions. The DVD Region has to match the region of the DVD player or it will not play.

When I insert a DVD from another region in my MacBook Pro I get a dialog box that lets me select a different region. Nice. But you can only change the region 5 times and then your final selection is just that, final.

Hardware differences can explain a bit of this situation, but not all of it. Certainly there is a way to manufacture a device that can play any DVD. In fact they exist, they just cost more. Licensing plays a role in this too.

Now come apps, including our DVApps. An app on the iPhone, iPad or Android will work no matter where that person is, where they reside or where they where when the bought the app. DVD Regions are not applicable in the app world.
